AES (Advanced Encryption Standard)
The AES is a cryptographic algorithm that was approved by the US National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) as a replacement for the Data Encryption Standard (DES) which had been approved for the encryption of financial information since the late 1970's.
In the late 1990's, DES was felt by many experts to be vulnerable to brute force attack by specialized computing machines, and to have a more limited utility where even desktop PCs have immense processing power available to them, and the Internet allows attackers to harness the spare time of hundreds or even thousands of computers.
NIST held a public competition for a replacement, and a number of algorithms were proposed. One entrant, Rijndael (now known as AES), was selected above the others and has been recommended as suitable for protecting computer information.
This has been done to provide you with confidence that your information has been protected using the best techniques currently available, and that it will stay adequately protected for some time to come.
"Assuming that one could build a machine that could recover a DES key in a second (i.e., try 255 keys per second), then it would take that machine approximately 149 thousand-billion (149 trillion) years to crack a 128-bit AES key. To put that into perspective, the universe is believed to be less than 20 billion years old."
"Barring any attacks against AES that are faster than key exhaustion, then even with future advances in technology, AES has the potential to remain secure well beyond twenty years."
How to encrypt drive (Encrypt external drive or second hard drive)
* If you connect a new drive or disconnect a drive , please click " Scan for hardware changes " to refresh the disk list window.
Step1, Save and close all files on the target drive.
Step2, Select the target disk.
Step3, Select encryption mode and portable use mode.
Step4, Type the password.
step5, Click the "Encrypt" button.
If you connect the encrypted disk to any machine, you will see below phenomenon:
1. Fixed drive: The disk drive is unrecognized, you can't see the drive letter, and the disk is inaccessible.
2. Removable drive: You can see the drive letter, no file on the drive, and you can not copy any file to the drive.
( Fixed drive: internal hard drive, usb hard drive, etc. Removable drive: usb flash drive, SD card, TF card, memory stick, etc. )
StorageCrypt does not change anything in your operator system, all changes are on the encrypted disk drive. So even if you uninstall the StorageCrypt or connect the encrypted drive to any machine, the drive is inaccessible. And the password is not saved to the disk. StorageCrypt uses data verify to validate the password, the encryption algorithm is 128 bits, it's high security level. So remember your password as possible as you can. If you lost password, we have no way to recover it.
How to decrypt drive
Step1. Connect the drive.
Step2. Select the target disk.
Step3. Type the password.
Step4. Click the "Decrypt" button.
You need not to select encryption mode before decrypting, StorageCrypt will identify it automatically.
In WinXP, Vista, Win7, after decrypting, the drive would be accessible immediately.
In Win2000, after decrypting of fixed drive, you must reconnect the drive or restart the system to take effect.
How to set public and privacy area
If the drive has more than one partition, you can set each partition to public or privacy. StorageCrypt only encrypts privacy partition, the public partition is accessible after encrypting.
Step1: Select the target disk.
Step2 : Click "set public and privacy".
Step3 : Check the box to set it to privacy partition. Uncheck the box to set it to public partition.
Step4 : Click "Commit setting " button.
By default, all partitions are set to privacy.
The setting would not be changed even if you uninstall StorageCrypt or connect the drive to other machine, unless you reset the setting.
Quick mode: Very fast, few seconds is enough to encrypt entire drive.
Deep mode: It is new feature in v4.0. Strong security, but need little more time to encrypt drive.The required time according to the drive capacity and file numbers, normally, less than half minute.
Portable use is new feature in v4.0.
Encrypt the drive with portable use mode, SClite(StorageCrypt lite edition) will be installed on target drive.
You can encrypt and decrypt the drive without software installed on each machine. (Windows system only)
The default setting is OFF.
FULL: Put encrypter and decrypter on target drive.
One Time: Only put decrypter on target drive. It is useful to deliver drive to other place.
"Portable use" works in two method:
1. The drive has public partition. (see "how to set public and privacy area")
StorageCrypt would write a folder 'SClite' to first public partition.
1MB of free space is required on first public partition.
2. The drive has no public partition
StorageCrypt would write a folder 'SClite' to first privacy partition, it only contains the encrypter.
And build a 1MB partition with folder 'SClite' on encrypted drive, it only contains the decrypter.
2MB of free space is required on first privacy partition.
There is no problem if you do not understand above principles. StorageCrypt will do anything for you automatically.
What you need to do is: 1.Find the folder 'SClite' on target drive. 2.Click 'SClite.exe' to decrypt or encrypt the drive.
When SClite run as encrypter, you need not to input the password, the password is remembered.
To change the password, run StorageCrypt to decrypt the drive, and then encrypt drive with another password.

Command line is new feature in v4.0.
Usage: storagecrypt </E /EQ /D> <Disk No.> <password>
/E Encrypt drive with deep mode.
/EQ Encrypt drive with quick mode.
/D Decrypt drive.
storagecrypt /E 2 hello
Encrypt(deep mode) disk2 with password "hello"
storagecrypt /EQ 2 hello
Encrypt (quick mode) disk2 with password "hello"
storagecrypt /D 2 hello
Decrypt disk2 with password "hello"
The disk no. must be the same as StorageCrypt disk list window.
The maximum length of password is 50 characters.
Purpose: Decrypt the external drive; backup files to the external drive; encrypt the external drive.
Create backup.bat file as below:
REM Full storagecrypt path. Decrypt the drive.

REM Delay few seconds, wait for Windows recoginized the drive.

* When decrypted, the drive would be assigned as default drive letter by Windows.Please note the correspondence between disk no. and drive letter.
These two options are new feature in v4.0.
Force dismount the drive: Force dismount the drive before encrypting even if the drive is still in use.
Hide password: Check this option to mask the password, uncheck the option to show the password you entered.
1. V4.0 can decrypt the drive that encrypted by v3.0, v3.0 can not decrypt the drive that encrypted by v4.0.
2. Do not disconnect the drive when the encryption or decryption process is not finished.
In most cases, StorageCrypt has ability to recover the data. In order to ensure data safety, please prevent this from happening.
3. Please remember your password clearly, if you lost it, we have no way to recover.
